Alter Elbtunnel

At the Old Elbe Tunnel I haven't been for a long time.
In my childhood that was the way from Wilhelmsburg (an island in the River Elbe, part of the city)
to the Sunday fish market at the northern waterfront. A small clang of the cap of the sewer, as a bike drives over it and 'Hey presto!' I am sitting in a bike seat up there in the front at my father's (and my sis at mom's: to jingle verboten!)
With a outside temperature of 30°C it is still wonderful chilly down here and today I am going with my family in reverse direction through the tube under the river Elbe.

Over her, and again in the heat, we enjoy some ice-cream, the fresh breeze and the view, before our redheaded daughters wanna go into the coldness of the tunnel, again.

And right there, 21m under the mean high water, friends unenspectedly come ours way! After a hearty hello we continue on, past the station Landungsbrücken to the neighborhood of the Portuguese

Schon mal probiert?

and there we revive our holidays in spring.
To be as a tourist on the road of your home town can be so refreshing!
Did you ever try?

  1. Your tunnel would be a great hideout on a hot summer's day. I could feel the coolness looking at your photos. Family, friends, ice-cream make the home town touring even more fun. We too go on walk a bouts in our city as if we are tourists and I just bought another year's membership to our local museum. Happy August to you and yours. xo

  2. it is a wonderful practice, to look at your own place with fresh eyes, to let yourself be taken by familiar corners, even from yesteryear. it is also a pleasant surprise to find hamburg in your little film, and recognize the opera building we saw and talked about, and which doesn't half dominate that city skyline... the tunnel reminds me of the greenwich thames tunnel, much breathing the same air of old as yours here. fancy meeting up old friends down under there...
